Description
Capital markets facilitate the trading of securities such as stocks, bonds, debentures, and similar instruments. These securities typically have a maturity of more than one year or are perpetual, meaning they have no fixed maturity.
It is commonly divided into two major segments within the capital market:
Primary Market: Known as the IPO market, this segment facilitates the subscription of newly issued securities by investors. Listed companies may also issue additional shares in this segment. Transactions are supported by intermediaries such as merchant bankers, brokers, debenture trustees, portfolio managers, bankers, registrars to issue, and share transfer agents. SEBI regulates all activities and intermediaries in the primary market.
Secondary Market: In this segment, investors trade previously issued securities among themselves, rather than purchasing directly from the issuing company after the initial offering.
